How to prepare for an ultrasound?
Before receiving preliminary approval for gallbladder-preserving surgery, all our patients are required to send their ultrasound results.
During the Examination
Please take clear photographs of the monitor and send 2-3 JPG images or record a 20-30 second video of the monitor.
Before the Ultrasound
• The evening before the ultrasound, have a light dinner without meat.
• Do not eat or drink anything (including water) for 8 hours before the ultrasound. You may rinse your mouth and brush your teeth. Do not smoke or chew gum. Avoid foods that may increase gas formation or are not part of your usual diet.
It would be helpful if the ultrasound report includes the following details:
• Shape of the gallbladder
• Length and width of the gallbladder
• Contents of the gallbladder: gallstones (approximate size and number), polyps (approximate size and number), sludge, sand, flakes, clots, or any foreign matter.
• Presence and type of free bile in the gallbladder.
• Condition of the bile duct: Is it free and unobstructed?
• Thickness of the gallbladder wall.
• Condition of the common bile duct: Is it unobstructed and not dilated?
• Any kinks, strictures, or deformities in the gallbladder.
• Signs of “porcelain” gallbladder walls.
